Low-Stakes Writing 2: Using SPACE to Provide Directions

Professional Engagement Assignment 4: Providing Directions
For this assignment, you are going to experiment with providing and improving directions to a classmate. First, you need to select a location within a 10-minute walking distance from your Jabs Hall classroom. Please make sure your destination is one your classmate can reach while adhering to social distancing guidelines. Then, you will write directions for a classmate to follow for Professional Engagement Assignment 4. You will be assigned a partner who will follow your directions and then provide feedback on a D2L discussion board.

Using the feedback you get on those directions from your classmate, you will revise your directions. Then, you will explain how your understanding of SPACE considerations informed those changes. Though this activity might seem removed from the kind of instructions you will typically give at work, the nature of providing instructions is similar no matter the kind of directions being provided. Giving instructions to others is a fairly common workplace activity.

This assignment has three parts: (1) writing directions for Professional Engagement Assignment 4 and posting them to the discussion board, (2) revising those directions, and (3) explaining your revisions using course concepts.
1.    For Professional Engagement Assignment 4, you will post your directions to the discussion board. Include your original directions in your Low Stakes 2 document for comparison to your revised directions. The following restrictions apply to the directions:
Only written words can be used to convey the directions. You may not provide illustrations or other aid.
You may not tell your classmate the name or identity of their destination. In other words, you cannot start out by writing, Im going to tell you how to get to the SUB.
2.    Provide revised directions based on the feedback about your original directions from the classmate who followed them and from your instructor.
3.    Describe how you changed/improved your original directions (from Professional Engagement Assignment 4).
Specifically state how your revised directions differ from your original ones.
Identify how your revised directions demonstrate all five SPACE considerations (see Chapter 3 of Competent workplace communication).

Use the next pages to respond to all three prompts. Be sure to address all requirements in your response. Complete responses will include your original directions, your revised directions, and your explanation of your revisions based on SPACE considerations.

Reflective Prompt ABC Clothiers, Inc. has a contract with Taylor & Sons, a retailer, to deliver one thousand (1,000) summers suits to Taylors place of business on or before May 1. On April 1, Taylor receives a letter from ABC informing him that ABC will not be able to make the delivery as scheduled, but could make the delivery a month later, on June 1. Taylor is very upset, as he had planned a big ad campaign, half the summer will be over by June 1 and wants to sue ABC right away. Assume that Taylor & Sons can either file immediately or wait until ABC fails to deliver the goods on May 1. What course of action is better under the circumstances?

The Wilt Chamberlain Argument
Robert Nozick uses his Wilt Chamberlain argument to defend his entitlement theory of justice over a patterned theory of justice like that of John Rawls. Describe the Wilt Chamberlain argument in your own words. Explain what can be said in its favor. Raise at least one problem for it, and discuss whether it can be adequately addressed by someone who defends Nozicks theory of justice.

In the next assessment, you will start to conduct your research study. We conduct research studies to expand our knowledge on how human behavior in the world is evolving. To conduct an effective study, we need to understand theories of development as they relate to our current environment and society.

The first step, however, is to create a research proposal that provides the detailed plan for your study. Be sure to use the Research Proposal Template [DOC], as it provides context and wording that you should use to help you clearly explain your main points. By using the template, you will cover all of the points below.

Insert your revised literature review in the Literature Review section in the template.
Operationally define the variables that you are using in your study.
State your hypothesis for your study.
Report on the method you will use to sample your participants.
You may want to look at the GSS website to see how participants were found.
Use your notes from the media piece to guide your sampling method selection.
Explain the method you will use to collect and analyze your data.
