examine what the different branches and layers of government do to address a policy using a current issue to illustrate it.

Complete a research essay on the government and healthcare. Remember this is being written for the president to read.

The U.S. healthcare system has been a controversial topic for decades. Here are the aspects and questions to address for this essay:

Identify a current issue being debated about the American healthcare system and state a preferred solution to it and why it’s preferred (This is your thesis statement).
Explain two competing solutions to this problem while addressing the responsibilities of each level of government (federal, state, and local) and the three branches of the federal government (executive, legislative, and judicial).
Build the argument for why your chosen solution is preferable, what critics say about the solution, and finally why the critics are wrong.
REQUIREMENTS:

750 word target length (about three pages), not including references listed at the end or footnotes if used.
Incorporation of concepts and terms from the required readings.
Inclusion of facts from a recent news article about the topic/solution.
Correct spelling, grammar, and formatting, whether it’s APA, MLA, or Chicago/Turabian.

FORMAT: a written report of at least 1,800 words total (not including references), Times New Roman size 12 font, double-spaced

AIM: to research and reflect on current caste politics in India, including the relationship between caste and religion today, and create practices/visions of a post-prejudice world

DESCRIPTION: You will be doing an alternate form of the final project that other students in the course are completing in groups. We would like you to provide an overview of current caste politics in India in the form of a written report.

Your report should incorporate information you learn from at least 2 interviews about caste that you conduct with individuals who are not in this course, such as your friends, family members, mentors, and wider acquaintances. (We encourage you to conduct these interviews via phone call, video conferencing, etc.) Your report should also integrate your summary and analysis of at least 6 sources that have not been assigned as readings in this course. (Please do not just repeat what the sources say – go deeper and tell us what you think about them and why.)

Your report should ultimately aim to provide an overview of current caste politics in India, including the relationship between caste and religion today, and offer potential practices/visions of reaching a post-prejudice world in the context of the broader course themes (comparative analyses of race, religion, and caste in India and the United States).

In order to accomplish these aims, you will also need to interrogate your own worldviews about caste and religion and how these worldviews developed, and perhaps compare/contrast your perspective with those of the individuals you interview, in addition to incorporating your source research and analysis about current caste politics in India

The novel is available on Kindle:
Kim Scott, That Deadman Dance, Bloomsbury, 2012, 368 pp. (Kindle)

Clearly based on the assigned reading, touch on these topics making use of specific references to the novel:

Distinguish differences between states in a federal system such as Australia is.
Review what makes the Aboriginal experience in Australia unique.
Identify the grounds for secessionism that breaks away from an independent state, whether on moral grounds or policy differences.
Explain Kim Scott’s juxtaposition of the two characters who represent native culture and customs on the one hand and white colonist society on the other as they increasingly confront each other.
Speculate about the differences in values between the Noongar people Scott writes about and other cultural groups.
Give your own appraisal of the character of the nineteenth-century whaling industry.
Depict how Americans are portrayed in Scott’s novel.

Students will choose a congressional committee hearing based on their personal interest, to read/watch. It does not matter if it is a House or Senate committee. After watching/reading the full hearing students will have to write a 2.5 3.5 page paper on the hearing. Students need to identify which committee they chose, who the chair of the committee was at the time of the hearing, when the hearing took place, and if anyone testified who those people were. Additionally, students are required to write about: the main topics of the hearing, if there were any debates on issues, who took part in any debates and what side of the issue they were on, why they choose that committee and hearing, and how that hear or committee relates to their interest.

A list of, as well as links to, the Congressional Committees can be found here: https://www.congress.gov/committees (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

Remember your paper must be in Times New Roman font, a font size of 12, double spaced, and have 1 inch margins. Failure to meet these parameters will result in points being taken off your assignment. Additional points may be taken off should a student not meet the length requirement of the assignment.

You are to find an article published in the last two months that relates to the First Amendment. The article can discuss any issue (budgets, security, etc.) but it must include coverage of how a First Amendment right is either being discussed, or at risk.

You are to write a 350-word essay on the article. Your essay must include a summary of what the article says (in your own words), and include an explanation of three major ideas from class. One of these ideas must relate to the First Amendment; another idea has to address the bias of the author– does the author write a neutral article, or are they favoring one side over the other; a third concept is up to you.
