Select a work from our course readings this semester. Read it thoroughly. Then, either online through Google or Google Scholar, in the physical library, do research to find an article that analyzes the work you chose. Do not choose a Sparksnotes/Shmoop/etc. type of website or article. Yes, those are geared towards students, but I want you to find an authors individual analysis, not an explanation of what youre expected to know for an English class. This may take some digging. You may end up finding a book chapter, a journal article, or a thoughtful blog post to discuss. If you are at a complete loss, please tell me well before the due date. I may be able to help point you in the right direction.

After selecting your article, read and annotate it. You should understand the authors main points about the text.

Now youre ready to begin drafting. The paper should contain the following components:

An introduction, summary, and explanation of the work you chose from our text
Your analysis of the work you chose from our course Does the author use literary devices, like foreshadowing or metaphor? How and where? You might discuss the setting or the characters, or whether or not the text is mimetic or didactic. Is there any historical significance to the text? Was there an event going on that impacted the text or the author in some way? Etc.
An introduction, summary, and an explanation of the article you found
Connect the article to the text and give your opinion on its validity. Is the author completely off the mark or accurate in their analysis? Why or why not?

This essay should be 6-8 pages overall including your Works Cited page. Your assignment should be in MLA format, double-spaced, and in 12 point Times New Roman font.

Whenever you quote, paraphrase, or summarize, you will use in-text citations to indicate the source. Additionally, I expect you to include a Works Cited page at the end of the essay where you will cite the work from our course as well as the article you locate, whether you found it online or elsewhere.

You can choose The Lottery or The Necklace for the course reading for this paper.

The Brain-The idea of this assignment is that you  will be able to explain how one part of the brain influences behavior or mental processing.
Discuss the following in a short 10 minute presentation about the part of the brain you were assigned.

location of the area

the function of the area

diseases related to that area of the brain

mental health issues related to that area of the brain

outcomes if an injury occurs to that area of the brain

Prompt: The Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade, which granted the legal right to abortion, is often discussed in mainstream reproductive rights outlets and in the news media as the ultimate deciding factor in people’s reproductive health and rights. This reading, A Reproductive Justice History, sheds light on so many other pieces of the puzzle.

From what you gathered from the reading. Answer the following questions.

1.  Why is this legal case alone insufficient for understanding the full picture of reproductive health, rights, and justice?

2.  How are larger histories and social structures related to race, class, gender, nation, colonization, and imperialism important?

Successful answers will

1) draw out the differences between a legal right granted by a course and justice/access in someone’s actual life, either as defined by the authors or using a hypothetical example
2) use examples from the reading drawing on historical and contemporary periods, trends, events, and/or cases.

Please write this using your own thoughts and words to describe your reaction

Needs to be  7-10 sentences,  Use quotation marks and page numbers only when using a direct quotation.
Please cite when making a point to answer the argument.

Please respond two weeks’ discussion board. Each week has one topic and you should write one page for each topic. I have attached our textbook in case you need.

Week 2 Forum topic: Comparing LTSS (Long Term Services and Supports) and Health Care Options

1) What do you call people who receive LTSS? (I personally have no background in healthcare so answer this from my point of view)

2) Please list what you think are the goals/expected outcomes of health care.

Do the same for LTSS. Compare your answers.

To what extent are they the same or different?

How have they responded to the COVID-19 Pandemic?

Week 3 Forum topic: Olmstead Plan and Experience Nursing Home
1. List one state (you can choose one from Alaska, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri) and whether or not the state has an Olmstead Plan (most do). If so, what are they doing to comply with the Olmstead Decision?  Please briefly summarize don’t cut and paste from the website.

2. Please read this article and watch the video:

“Experiencing Life, Briefly Inside a Nursing Home” https://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/24/health/24nursing.html?pagewanted=all

“A Personal Lesson in Geriatric Care” https://www.nytimes.com/video/us/1247463989823/a-personal-lesson-in-geriatric-care.html

Then, answer one of these questions and respond to someone else’s post on another question. Try to keep it at maximum 10 students on each question as a primary post:

i. What do you think about this as a learning experience?

ii. The student is worried about what it will mean to residents when she leaves. Is this a concern? Why or why not?

iii. Would you be able to do this as a learning experience or even on a more limited basis as what the administrator did (bathing) in the following article? Why or why not?    “The Sense of An Ending” https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2013/05/20/the-sense-of-an-ending-2

CASE:
Both, the Labour-led government and the opposition National Party have recently announced they plan to charge returning Kiwis for their stay in managed isolation.
On July 29, 2020, Megan Woods, the minister in charge of managed isolation facilities, announced new legislation that would allow the government to charge some people arriving in New Zealand. Woods proposes to levy a fee of $3,100 for the first adult in a room, $950 for every additional adult, and $475 every additional child. She puts forward only to charge temporary entrants and returnees who left after the legislation came into force.
Woods says, The entire focus of this policy is making sure that we get a balance, that we recognise New Zealanders do have a right to return home but that some travel might be considered discretionary – when thats the case, people should pay.
The opposition National Party would charge anyone returning to New Zealand for the costs of quarantine, whereas governments New Zealand First declares they would vote for the measure but prefer to see a more comprehensive plan that charges all returnees.

TASK:
Using what you learned about private and social costs as well as private and social benefits in private decisions-making, explain why managed isolation has been imposed on cross-border travellers entering into New Zealand. Use a diagram of the market for international air travel to illustrate your point.
Using what you learned about private and social costs as well as private and social benefits in private decisions-making, explain the economic consequences of not charging for managed isolation upon entry.
Given what you understand about the price elasticity of demand and supply, explain how the proposed managed isolation fee legislation will affect travel decisions of New Zealanders and NZ permanent residents and how it will affect the airlines. Use suitable diagrams to illustrate your answer.
Given what you know about the policy, what will be its implication for fairness in New Zealand society?
Based on your discussion, do you think the governments plans will be beneficial for society? In what way would the oppositions plans be better? In what way would it be worse?

Assignment: Take a walk in your neighborhood, as long or short as you like.

Guided by the ideas of one or more of the readings, bring in a 2-

minute story (1 double-spaced page) to read aloud
– A quick word about the assignment for next week: It’s meant to be coordinated with the readings for next  week–Whitehead (pdf below) , White ( https://cpb-us-w2.wpmucdn.com/campuspress.yale.edu/dist/b/3011/files/2018/08/Here-is-NY_EB-White1-yk0d8g.pdf ) , and Berger ( https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/30/nyregion/william-helmreich-dead-coronavirus.html )
– meant to address a particular walk (you can even title or sub-title these with something like “Brandon Lake Road, Albany, NY, September 14, 1:15-2:00 p.m.”), or a specific detail of that walk, rather than reflect on your usual walks or other more general perspective. Do the readings first so you can have them in mind to start your excursion. Be sure to consider what you mean by “story.”
