Question: Should the US have gotten involved in the Vietnam War?

Format: Write the answer from two different perspectives: One answering the question yes; the other answering no. Each answer needs to have sufficient evidence to support the answer. By evidence, you will need to use primary sources; those are sources from the actual time period.

List of Primary Sources: (If you discover other sources, that is great. Just get my approval to make sure they will work.)

Writing Assignment Grading Criteria

The main objective for this writing assignment is for you to answer a historical question and explore its implications for future developments in American history. This assignment is worth 100 points. The following is a guideline on grading rubric I will use to asses your papers.

You must observe the format guidelines: Papers should be 5 FULL double-spaced  pages with page margins no more than 1.25 and font, Times New Roman, no larger than 12 pt. Any infraction will result in an automatic deduction of 5 points or a half-letter grade.

You can also lose 5 points if you do not meet the requirement for using a reliable outside source. You must use quotation marks properly and footnote your outside source in order to receive the full 5 points.

You must also address all parts of the prompt. Make sure that you fully develop your ideas and focus on communicating your thought process as best you can. The content, organization, and development of your argument are the most important aspects of this assignment. The majority of your grade is going to hinge on your ability to communicate through this paper your interpretation of the historical prompt. 80 points

Punctuation and grammar are important in communicating effectively through writing. 10 points of your grade will be dedicated to this aspect of writing. You can lose a point for each major punctuation or grammar error. In addition you can also be penalized for repeated minor mechanical errors. Mechanical error can result from over-reliance on the Word grammar and spell check. I recommend you print your paper and read a hard copy aloud. You will catch many errors just because they dont sound right when you say them aloud.

Major Mechanical Errors                                        Minor Mechanical Errors

            sentence fragment                                                      inappropriate passive voice

run-on/fused sentence                                                major comma blunders or omission

            faulty subject/verb agreement                                    misspellings

incorrect verb tense                                                    incorrect word choice

illogical verb shift                                                      clumsy or awkward sentences

word ending errors (s, ed, ing)                                    point of view errors

                  ((((((( FIRST PART ))))
Analysis. After describing the context, you should relate the experience to the leadership literature. Select two leadership theories from the theories listed below.

Skills approach (CH 3)
Situational approach (CH 5)/ Path-goal theory (CH 6)
LMX theory (CH 7)
Transformational leadership (CH 8)
Servant Leadership (CH 10)

(((For each theory, please do the following:)))

Briefly explain the leadership theory.
Apply the theory to the context (explain the connections between the theory and your situation).
Skills approach Which leadership skills did you demonstrate? Explain how you demonstrated these skills. Which leadership skills did you not demonstrate? Explain how you did not demonstrate these skills.
Situational approach Which development level were your followers? Were all your followers at the same development level? Explain why your followers were at this level(s). Which leadership style(s) did you use? Explain how you demonstrated this leadership style(s). Did you use the same leadership style with every follower?
Path-goal theory Which follower/task characteristics were observable in your situation? Did all your followers have the same follower characteristics? Explain these characteristics. Which leadership styles did you use? Explain how you demonstrated these leadership styles.
LMX theory Which of your followers were in the in-group and which were in the out-group? Which phases of leadership making did you go through? Explain how you went through these different phases.
Transformational leadership Which transformational factors did you demonstrate? Explain how you demonstrated these factors. Which transformational factors did you not demonstrate? Explain how you did not demonstrate these factors.
Servant leadership Which servant characteristics/ behaviors did you demonstrate? Explain how you demonstrated these characteristics/ behaviors. Which servant characteristics/ behaviors did you not demonstrate? Explain how you did not demonstrate these characteristics/ behaviors.
((Analyze your performance))
According to this theory, were you an effective leader? Why/Why not?
According to this theory, what could you have done differently to be a more effective leader?

                        ((((SECOND PART))))

((((General Tips: )))))

Make sure you explain and support your claims by making sure you provide specific examples and relate them to leadership theories. Include other class principles or motivational/leadership theories to support your statements, when appropriate.

Example #1: Saying “I had an in-group relationship with my followers” will not earn you full points. Instead, elaborate on how you know which type of a relationship you had, how your followers showed that, how you showed that, etc.

Example #2: Saying “My participatory leadership style works best with individuals who are willing and able to do work” will also not earn you full points. Instead, explain why your participatory style is conducive to working with individuals who are willing and able to do work.

Your paper will be evaluated on the depth of your analyses. If another theory is obvious and you do not discuss it, you will be penalized.

Make a coherent story by relating theories to each other and tightening the description of your analyses, and the theoretical background.

Pay attention to spelling, grammar, and sentence construction.  This is not a writing course, but I do care about details.

To communicate effectively as a leader, its important to be concise and remove all clutter. Therefore, your leadership paper should be maximum 3 typed pages (excluding possible references) in length, double spaced, 12pt Times New Roman font.  Hence, this is also an exercise in getting your message across in a space-efficient manner.

Dont Plagiarize!  In academia, one of the worst sins you can commit is to plagiarize. To plagiarize means claiming someone elses ideas or writing as your own.  When you dont acknowledge that you are using someone elses ideas or writing, that is plagiarism. In academic writing, you acknowledge the ideas of others by citing them in the body of your paper and in the bibliography. The use of unacknowledged ideas or writing is plagiarism. This includes published works, but also includes using papers written by other students.

Dont procrastinate! The due date for your leadership paper will arrive rapidly and it will coincide with other demands in this course, such as preparing your groups presentation, as well as demands in your other courses.

Responds to all of the following:

1. What is your initial impression of the BSG?  Is it what you expected?

Review the five characteristics of minority groups from your textbook. ( I have included below)  Based on those characteristics, research, identify and discuss at least THREE racial, ethnic, cultural, or religious minority groups in the US.  Why are these three groups considered minority groups? Use 2-3 sources and 1 page for this discussion.

The text book : According to Charles Wagley and Marvin Harris (1958), a minority group is distinguished by five characteristics: (1) unequal treatment and less power over their lives, (2) distinguishing physical or cultural traits like skin colour or language, (3) involuntary membership in the group, (4) awareness of subordination, and (5) high rate of in-group marriage

The Secret Life of the Brain: The Teenage Brain, discuss two things you learned regarding human development from the video. Support this new knowledge with an example you have experienced or observed in your own life, as well as information from the Broderick & Blewitt text and slide notes.

Not to summarize large portions of the film and/or textbook.  What I am most interested in is either (1) how the information helps you to understand yours or others development differently; or (2) how this information will impact your counselor identity moving forward!
