In addition to the instruction given above, for this particular pre-drafting journal. We are also given the write-up below:

this paper is to apply two ethical theories to a social justice question and determine which one best defends its conclusion.  Be sure that you argue equally strongly on each side of the issue before you decide which approach is best.  This a sort of practice run for your final project.

You can choose a topic question of your own, or select one from the final project topic suggestions.

Gender and Sex Issues
What is an appropriate ethical response to the global problem of violence against women?
Was it just for the US to legalize same-sex marriage?
    Is pornography unethical?
Does the #MeToo movement handle the issue of sexual harassment and predation ethically?

Your paper should take the form of a standard essay, including an intro paragraph with a clear thesis and brief roadmap, a series of body paragraphs that begin with clear topic sentences, and a concluding paragraph that simply reviews the main points of your paper.  Aim for 3-4 pages in length, not including title and reference pages, in APA or MLA format.

2-4 pages in length not counting the title page (see below)
The front title page should contain your name and the title of the assignment.
If you have citations in your essay, you must include a reference page to the end of the essay following the APA standard.

Prior to the beginning of one class each week (e.g. prior to the Tuesday class or prior to the Thursday class), students are required to write a short summary of one of the required readings for that class and upload the summary to the course website. This summary should be between 300 and 500 words (approximately one page).

The summaries are posted under the assignments tab on canvas or can be found under each module. You have the option to upload either a PDF or a word document. The summaries are due by 1:00 am the day before the class and cannot be uploaded after that time.

There are 10 weeks of class. You need to complete 10 reading summaries; your lowest score may be dropped. If you make a reasonable effort and write something thoughtful, you will receive full credit. I expect that everyone should regularly be receiving full credit.

The summary should cover the following: (i) Why is the paper important (or why not)? (ii) An overview of the core contributions of the paper. (iii) What you liked or did not like about the paper. (iv) How the paper is connected to other studies in the course. (Organize the paper structure in lines with the questions given)

February 18, 2021: Ethnicity

Habyarimana, James, Macartan Humphreys, Daniel N. Posner, and Jeremy M. Weinstein. (2007). Why Does Ethnic Diversity Undermine Public Goods Provision? American Political Science Review, 101(4): 709-725.

Hjort, Jonas. (2014). Ethnic Divisions and Production in Firms, Quarterly Journal of Economics, 129(4): 1899-1946.

In 2010, the UK created its Behavioral Insights Team  (Links to an external site.)and the Danes formed the Danish iNudgeyou (Links to an external site.) unit. The European Nudging Network (TEN) (Links to an external site.) was launched in June 2014. Not to be left too far behind, on September 15, 2015, President Obama, through executive order, established the White House (WH) Social and Behavioral Sciences Team (Links to an external site.) (SBST) as a part of the pre-existing White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). The OSTP was established by law in 1976.

Then everything changed. One of President Trump’s initial actions on January 20, 2017, was to disband the OSTP leadership and effectively discontinue this portion of federal government science and technology support. The WH SBST and its associated website remain frozen awaiting to see if President Biden revives it. The applied behavioral sciences program, however, still continues in Europe and in most Social and Behavioral Sciences Divisions within universities across the US and Europe. To get an idea of where this is headed, the most recent nudging ideas being discussed by the Global Nudging Community can be found pinned on the home page’s geographical map of TEN’s website, (Links to an external site.)

One example of nudging is to apply our understanding of Behavioral Economics to entice people to make rational decisions when they otherwise might not.

What do you think of this plan and the global nudging movement in general?

Do you feel these efforts to nudge individuals (with bounded rationality to make choices that, at least from the outside, appear to be truer to consumer optimum) are of value? What behavioral obstacles did Thaler and Benartzi identify that apparently were causing people not to make choices in their best interests? Do you ever find the second obstacle applying to you (like, in getting around to doing this discussion, lol)? Is nudging something the government should financially support? Do you agree with President Trump that this movement, as well as most other policy issues related to science, should not be encouraged by the White House? Have you started saving for retirement yet?

PETERSON’S POLITICAL ECONOMIC STRUCTURALISM AND STONE’S URBAN REGIME ANALYSIS
Summarize the main features of both theories. What does each look at (independent variables) to explain urban policy decisionmaking (dependent variables)? What else does each theory say is important for understanding urban politics?
Features and flaws in both theories. What does the theory illustrate about urban life well? What does it miss? You may wish to think of this as what do you think of the utility of each theory: how useful is it for understanding, explaining, and predicting real world events?
For your critique you should review the authors readings where they have presenting their ideas (of course). But also review the readings from Week 3 which provide additional perspectives on these theories from other sources. You shouldn’t need any outside resources for this paper – just the 7 readings assigned thus far, so you won’t need a Works Cited page for this paper, but you should still use APA or MLA citations in the paper when you are quoting, paraphrasing, or drawing on a reading and presenting ideas which are not your own.
