For this essay, you are asked to compare Confucian, Daoist, and Legalist ideas about how people should be governed. To do so, review what happened in China during the long Zhou Dynasty and the Qin Dynasty (Chapter 3, pp. 122-134; Khan Academy, The Philosophers of the Warring States). As the book explains, during the later Zhou Dynasty (the Warring States Period), China fell into disarray as several states warred with one another for the right to rule the land. It was in this context that individuals engaged in philosophical reflection on what was needful to restore order and a good society. These individuals were later categorized as belonging to different schools of thought. Confucianism, Daoism, and Legalism were three of the most important.
For this essay, review that historical background and then read selections on governing from Confuciuss Analects, the Laozi (Old Master, also known as the Dao de jing), and the Han Feizi (Master Han Fei). These are, respectively, Confucian, Daoist, and Legalist texts, and the selections introduce the author or the person to whom the writing is rightly or wrongly attributed.

To write this essay, introduce the historical setting (time, place, events), these three texts and their authors (or putative authors), and the topic of the paper. The topic for this paper is Confucian, Daoist, and Legalist ideas about how people should be governed, and their similarities or differences. Explain these ideas based strictly on these three primary sources (be sure to read the entire selection). This highlighted point is important. Go to these ancient sources for yourself, and develop your insights based on them, and explain your reasoning based on them. That means quoting or paraphrasing them as necessary to explain your thinking. Then conclude.

Mr. and Mrs. R. are the parents of two sons, Terence and Jason. Terence is a 28-year-old man who is married, works for a railroad company, and attends college part-time. Terence suffers from chronic glomerulus nephritis, a fatal kidney disease. He is now being kept alive by frequent dialysis treatments, a procedure that cannot be continued much longer.

Jason is 27 years old, and has been living in a state institution for many years. He has an I.Q. of around 35, approximately corresponding to the mental age of a very young child. He is further handicapped by a speech defect, which makes it difficult for him to communicate with those who are not well acquainted with him.

Doctors determined that Terence would have to have a kidney transplant in order to survive. The new kidney could come either from a cadaver, if and when one became available, or from a live donor if a compatible donor could be found. Terences entire family was tested, including his mother, his father, and a number of other relatives. None of these family members were medically acceptable as live donors due to incompatible blood type or tissue type. As a last resort, Jason was tested and found to be highly compatible.

A psychiatrist who examined Jason stated that he believed Terences death would have an extremely traumatic effect upon Jason. Terence is Jasons role model and is vital to Jasons continued improvement at the hospital and in school.

Should Jason be allowed to donate a kidney to his brother Terence, to save his brothers life?

What is a bureaucracy that most impacts your life? List the ideal-type characteristics outline by Weber in your reading on formal organizations, and evaluate Webers ideal-type. Does it accurately describe the bureaucracy you selected? Why or why not?

Select a topic that interests you and that affects your community directly(RGV, STC, or some other Community you consider yourself a part of).  For this essay, you will identify a problem that is affecting this community. Part of your essay will be devoted to establishing why or how this issue is a problem. Also, in a subsequent part of the essay, you will also propose a solution to the problem. Part of your essay will be devoted to discussing why the solution you have proposed is a good one. Because your essay should address both of the above purposes, your thesis should mention both parts of the essay topic in some way.
Write an argumentative essay using the Classical Model that advocates a course of action to improve a problem related to your topic.  The classical model utilizes the rhetorical appeals (logos, ethos, pathos) and refutes opposing arguments (concession/refutation).
Further, this is a formal, academic essay, so follow the essay conventions for academic writing–title, introduction that ends with a thesis. (Thesis may be at the end of the introductory paragraph or may be presented in a separate paragraph immediately after the introduction.) Essay must also contain well-organized, separate body paragraphs (with suitable topic sentences) that contain support for the thesis (evidence, logical argument, rhetorical appeals, etc.), transitions (at the beginning and inside body paragraphs), and a conclusion.
