Media Essay Two

The Assignment
Find an article in the media (not more than one year old) that demonstrates issues and controversies surrounding the use or development of technology in our society. The article chosen should deal with at least one or more of the concepts or questions covered in the reading up to this point in the course (chapters 5 – 10). Some of the concepts and questions we have explored that you will likely find in the media include:
The diffusion of technology
Efforts to restrict the diffusion of technology
Patents
Secret Technologies
Pollution (acid rain, toxic wastes, greenhouse gases, etc.)
Depletion of resources (fossil fuels, for example)
Alternative fuels/Energy
Global warming
Stem cell research
Genetics
Cloning
GM Crops or Genetically Modified Foods
Life sustaining technologies/inappropriate technology
Halfway technologies
Bridge Technologies
Diagnostic Technologies
The changing nature of work
Materialism
The role of the technology in job creation

These are just a sample of some of the concepts and questions surrounding technology and society that we have explored so far. You should not have difficulty finding a current article that deals with at least one of these, or other topics covered thus far. Sources for your article might include but not be limited to, newspapers, websites such as CNN.COM or MSN.COM, magazines such as Time or Newsweek, or some of the electronic databases available through the FTCC Library webpage. These databases include such useful resources as Issues and Controversies, Science Resource Center, NC Live, and the Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center. See COURSE INFORMATION for guidance on accessing these databases if you have never used them.

Keep in mind, this is a current events assignment that relates course material to things going on in our world (and thus the news) now. Do not use articles more than one year old.

After you have selected an article and read it, write a one or more page essay that explains:
1. What is the controversy?
2. How is technology involved and what are the potential impacts on society?
3. How many sides are there to this issue (at least according to your article), and what are they?
4. What concepts or questions explored thus far in the course are apparent in this article? State the concepts by name!
5. What are your own feelings on this issue, and has any of the material covered thus far in the course impacted this opinion?
6. What is the source for your article? Provide the name, date, issue and/or volume number of the publication, name of the author (if given) and name of the article for print sources such as newspapers or magazines. Provide the web link for online sources. Provide the database and article name for articles accessed through the FTCC Library’s electronic databases.
Your written response to the above should be done in MS Word or a similar word processing program, using size 12, Times New Roman font. Further, the essay must be in MLA format and must include a works cited page that at a minimum lists the course textbook and the news article as sources.

you are to create the following three: intervention grid, evaluation, and care plan

Find a newspaper article about a person (such as a politician, athlete, musician, or movie star) whose ethnicity and/or cultural background differs from your own, who has had an encounter with a system (such as criminal justice, welfare, unemployment, psychiatric, child welfare services, or the like), who also has a co-occurring disorder (such as substance abuse). Choose a theoretical approach that you would use to guide your work with this person, and create a chart similar to the intervention grid shown on page 93 of the text to determine some of the psychological, organizational, community, and political structures that could be impacting this person.

Attached in the entire rubric and the intervention grid that is talked about being on page 93.

Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed in your evaluation and care plan:
Analysis or evaluation of the persons social, emotional, developmental, and economic needs identified in the linked article
Describes a behavioral-focused goal that is trauma-informed and demonstrates the relationship between the goal and the person identified in the linked
article
Describes a service-focused goal that is trauma-informed and demonstrates the relationship between the goal and the person identified in the linked
article
Describes specific measurable milestones for each goal including a description and method of how services provided will be measured
Recommends a method of measuring services for each goal

Select one event or experience that you believe has had a significant influence on your developmental trajectory to date. Relationship with a mentor (make it up). Describe the event or experience you select, and insights gained that have influenced your development to date. Discuss rationale for the significance of this event /experience in your personal development.

Search for a case of alleged or proven fabrication or falsification that has received media attention;
there are a number of famous cases (avoid selecting a plagiarism case now; we will discuss that topic later, and also avoid using the Han case from Iowa State; its been overused).
Learn as much as you can about the case you choose. Then prepare 2-3 paragraphs total that answer the following questions:

1. In the case you researched, what did the investigator do that was alleged to be or determined to be research misconduct? How was the case resolved? At what point do you think the investigator made the decision to commit research misconduct? Why do you think the investigator made the choices they did? What might have done to prevent it?

2. Imagine that a similar event occurred in your own laboratory.
a. How could you have detected the alleged misconduct?
b. What would you have done once you detected it?

3. Talk to your PI or lab mates. Have they encountered questionable research practices from anyone theyve worked with in the past? How did they handle it? What would they do if they did encounter such a situation? Provide a sentence or two summarizing your conversation.

Using the information provided in this module, I want you all to briefly review and refresh your understanding of the Bill of Rights, comprising of the first ten amendments to the United States Constitution. While it’s easy to take a stance of “The actions of the (federal) government don’t really affect me”, the BoR absolutely impacts our lives on a daily basis, so much so that there is likely not a single document within the history of the United States that has comparable impact. A couple of key points that you should keep in mind.
The Bill of Rights (BoR) is one of the critical compromises that allowed our nation to form with all thirteen colonies as members. Members of the Anti-Federalist party (headed by James Madison and Thomas Jefferson to name a few) argued that a federal government would be too strong and could lead to tyrannical oversight. Therefore, the Federalist party agreed to allow the Anti-Federalists to pen ten amendments that would be ratified alongside the United States Constitution.
This was huge at the time. Though the idea of a limited government is commonplace today, at the time the greatest powers in the western (and eastern for the most part) world were hemmed by absolute monarchs or systems in which the ruling person or body was extremely powerful. The idea that a president for instance could simply be voted out and that rule would change hands often without violence was pretty radical.
All of the rights in the BoR are negative rights. You should recognize this term from your text at this point as well as understanding that these rights specifically state that the government cannot  act in a certain way. Keep this in mind because….
I want you, for the purposes of this discussion paper, to draft an 11th amendment that you feel should be included with the original ten of the BoR. This is a “research paper” (Gasp!) in the sense that you should devise a premise (I think that the 11th amendment should have mentioned that the government must not do ___ ), support your premise with rhetoric (logical argumentation that explains why your premise is valid) and external sources (research articles, statistics). The format of the essay should contain these elements:

A very very brief overview of the BoR. You could literally cite the document itself. Don’t waste a lot of time on this.
A proposed amendment
Support for the amendment (your own rationale, lived experiences and external sources)
Discuss how this will actually impact you/us and why you thought that, out of any possible amendment, this was the one to go for
Try not to overthink this one too much. A solid page and a half or two pages should be very sufficent to cover those points. Please use APA style throughout the paper (double spaced, 12pt font, TNR, in text and bibliographical citations in APA format). So long as you make a good faith effort and include all of the grading criteria you should have a solid grade to boost you up!

Grading Criteria:

Paper is logical, reasonable and is on topic.

The proposed amendment is both in line with the other amendments (negative right, focused on the government) and also reasonable in nature (as neat as ending world hunger would be, it’s probably beyond the scope of the United States Federal Government, for example).

Paper is formatted in APA style and contains both in-text citations and a bibliography.

Two external sources are used at minimum.

The page length is at least one and a half pages, double spaced in standard APA style.

Please read carefully and answer all questions below in one complete essay. Be sure to elaborate on your answers:

The brain sits in the cranium surrounded by cerebral fluid. When a severe blow to the head occurs, the brain may collide with the cranium, then bounce back and collide with the opposite side of the cranium. At the neuronal level, a concussive blow to the head results in a twisting or stretching of the axons, which in turn creates swelling. Eventually, the swelling may subside and the neuron may return to its normal functioning. However, if the swelling of the axon is severe enough, the axon may disintegrate and may even cause permanent damaged. Many athletes will experience multiple concussions over the course of their career. Recently the NFL has stated it expects 1 in 3 former players will develop long-term cognitive issues.

Imagine a football player is tackled and hits the back of his head. As a result, his brain has hit the back of the cranium, then the front.

Name two specific brain structures. You may not use a lobe/cortex or neurons, so name specific structures like the hippocampus (but don’t use hippocampus). How would they likely be affected and why? What are the functions of these structures?
What temporary symptoms would we expect to see as result from trauma to the brain areas you listed above and why? You will have to do some research on this topic.
Additionally, what type of long-term issues would you expect to see from more permanent damage to the brain areas you mentioned above and why? You will have to do some research on this topic.
Based on what you have written, do you think there should be stricter regulations for how soon a player (of any sport) can return after a concussion? Why or why not? This is not a mere opinion essay; provide academic support for your answer.
Your paper will be checked for plagarism by Safe Assign. So prior to writing your essay, be sure to review course announcements about scholarly sources, citation, plagiarism, etc.

Be sure to review the rubric prior to submission.

Consider how trauma would have caused the aggression and lack of empathy in Beth. Write your discussion post on your thoughts about Beth. Share how you believe trauma could cause Beth to be so “cold,” “empty,” and yet “angry” toward every living being (people and animals) around her.
